Melaka (Malacca) is a lovely historical town in Malaysia, and it is especially well-known as a food heaven despites its rich heritage colours. However, whenever I’m back in my hometown (ya I’m a Malaccan), there was 1 thing that I couldn’t get — gourmet coffee. Well, there are cafes like Starbucks, Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, Secret Recipe and etc, but these chains are definitely not serving the type of gourmet coffee I mean.
Last weekend when I was in Melaka, I tried Googling on my iPhone… and… surprisingly, I found a new (just established for a few months) coffee bar that has its own in-house roastery — Khaki Coffee Bar.
“A coffee bar owner that invests in roastery facility, he must be very serious into coffee. This place can’t be too bad” I thought to myself. Immediately, I called to the phone number shown in the website to confirm its business hours. Then, very excitedly, went to Khaki Coffee Bar located in Melaka Raya, the town area.
The Coffee
I ordered a Long Black, and a Cappuccino. Shown in this picture here is the Cappuccino with heart shape latte art.

During my visit, my coffee was prepared by the barista - Yeong. Yeong (I hope I spell his name correctly) was a friendly guy, humbly introduced himself as a relatively fresh barista that has began learning the skills of coffee brewing since 5 months ago, when Khaki Coffee Bar started its operation.
I was glad to see that the beans were ground right before brewing. And I could see that Yeong was quite careful throughout the process, and paid some attention to the details like cleaning and wiping the portafilter dry.
The temperature of the Long Black and Cappuccino foam were just right. The house blend was aromatic, but personally I prefer a stronger body. I will try the Espresso next time, to get the real taste of the house blend.
Ambiance
The setup is still pretty much kinda “work in progress” type. Half of the shop is fitted with an well-equipped coffee bar and some seating arrangements, while the other half at the back is the roastery and coffee beans storage area. Khaki Coffee Bar is a place to get your thirst for gourmet coffee fixed, but not a place for nice cafe ambiance, at the moment.
I’ll be back, I’ll be a regular patron there whenever I’m back at my hometown.
Location and Contact
Address: No 625, Jalan Melaka Raya 10, Taman Melaka Raya, 75000 Melaka
It’s located at the row opposite Pure Bar. As of the up-to-date contact number and business operation hours, I think it’s best referring to their official website www.khakicoffeebar.com
The owner, Mr. Chew, is a technical person that sells and repairs coffee brewing equipments too.
